At the beginning of the month, I did a post talking about looking at reviews before you buy a big ticket item. This is also true for vacations.
Who wants to book an amazing vacation, only to find out when you get there that the hotel is falling apart? Or even if the hotel is beautiful, that the service really stinks and will ruin your trip?
TripAdvisor is the answer for finding reviews for hotels. You name the hotel, and you’ll find plenty of reviews about the hotel. I will note that it does seem that some people can find anything to complain about, so think about that when reading your reviews, but you will at least start to get an idea about what the hotel is really like, and if it will be the type of hotel you will enjoy.
This is something that we do every single time before we book a vacation. We want to make sure that the hotel is at least decent, and that we’ll be happy there. I really recommend spending the few minutes that it takes to read a few reviews whenever you decide on a hotel. It has helped us many times.
You can also look up things to do at your destination, which is also helpful if you’re going for one reason, but are looking for other things to do.
While I’m talking about TripAdvisor, right now you can enter to win a $5,000 trip. Who wouldn’t want a free vacation? I know I would!

Are you looking for some cheap kids shoes? Or maybe newborn or toddler shoes for less?
Today and tomorrow only, Darling Shoes has all of their shoes for $1.00 or $2.00. These shoes are normally $20.00 and up, but they are getting ready to launch a new line, and so are trying to get rid of their older shoes.
There is no coupon code needed, just go to the website and you will see that all of the shoes are just $1.00 or $2.00. It does look like sizes are going quickly since it’s such a good price, so I just wanted to let you know.
Since the prices are so low, you might consider getting shoes that your kids might fit into in a year or two as well. That way not only do you save money now, but for the next few years as you won’t have to buy them any new shoes.

You hear it on the news all the time. So and so said you should drink more water to be healthy. They say 8 glasses a day is what everyone should be drinking, as it has many health benefits.
While I agree drinking water is better than drinking many other things (especially as far as calories go), there is an even better reason to drink more water. The savings…it’s free!
I’m not saying to give up your favorite juices, sodas, coffees or teas. But if even once a day you have a glass of water (which is free) instead of that other drink, you will save money. While one glass of juice really doesn’t sound like much money, it does add up over time.
If we assume a bottle of juice cost $3.00, and you will get 8 drinks out of it, each glass is about $0.37. If each day you were to replace that glass of juice with water, you would save $135 a year. While the cost of different drinks can vary greatly, saving over $100 a year for replacing one glass with water is incredible.
Plus, each little thing helps. Would you miss drinking that one glass of juice or soda a day? Probably not. But, that same $135 that you just saved could go towards a lot of things. It could pay for a night in a hotel room on vacation, or quite a few meals out! It could probably even pay for a few of your bills.
Think about that the next time you’re trying to decide what to drink.

Since most people are enjoying a nice (short!) quiet week of work, I thought this would be a good time to show you some online contests you can enter.

Another way to save money when traveling is to make sure you get the best prices on your trip. Airfare, hotel, car rentals and attraction tickets can all add up to an expensive trip! While it’s always good to go to many websites to comparison shop, sometimes you might not want to spend that much time doing it.
With Tripology, the travel agents will come to you! You enter in any information you have. Where you want to go, what type of trip it is, your budget, or anything else that will help you get the trip you want. Then you will get matched up with up to 3 travel agents who can help you find exactly what you are looking for.
This will help you get the most competitive price, and you won’t have to search hard to find exactly what you are looking for.

Now that we’re getting really close to Christmas and the end of the year, a lot of retailers are lowering their prices even more. They know that most people have purchased their gifts, and still want you to spend with them…so they are including free gifts, free shipping, or even more discounts on the prices.
Even if you have already purchased all of your gifts, this could be the best time to start getting ahead! If you have some gifts you’ll have to purchase in the next few months, keep your eyes out now. You might get the gift now for half the price!
Don’t use this as an excuse to go spend more money than you want though. Otherwise you’re not saving money at all. But if you will need these things soon anyway, you might as well get them when they are on sale!

Did you travel outside of the United States between February 1st, 1996 – November 8th, 2006? If so, you may be entitled to a refund! There has been a class action suit against Mastercard, Visa, and Diners Card where people say they have overpaid with currency conversions.
They have settled, and now you can get a refund! How does this work?
You should have received a paper in the mail. If not, you can still go to this website to fill out the information. You can then either fill out the forms you were sent, or do it online here and you can get some money back.
Here is the nice part. There are 3 refund options:
Option 1: Request an easy refund of $25.00. It’s recommended if you traveled outside of the U.S. for less than one week or had foreign transactions of less than $2,500 using your eligible cards during 1996 – 2006.
Option 2: Request a Total Estimation Refund based on your typical spending during travel and your answers to a few questions about your own travel outside of the U.S. This option should be used if you spend more than $2,500 on eligible cards during the time period. Refunds will be a maximum of 1% of the estimated foreign transactions.
Option 3: Request a refund based on information that you provide concerning your annual estimated foreign transactions during the 1996 – 2006 period. This option is recommended if you had extensive foreign travel or foreign transactions and are willing to provide year-by-year information. Refunds will be a maximum of 1% – 3% of your foreign transactions.
During that time frame I have spent almost 3 weeks abroad, but I’m not sure exactly how much I spent. I decided to do things the easy way, and take my $25.00 refund. I’m very happy with this, especially since it is found money! Until I got the letter in the mail, I had no idea I was getting any money, so I’m very happy with it.
So if you’ve been out of the country during the above time frame, you might want to take a look into it and see if you qualify for a refund! It’s always nice to get money you didn’t expect!
